The Canadian federal government legalized recreational cannabis throughout the country on October 17, 2018, so you are free to enjoy a joint or any other form of cannabis in the country.
But before you do, make sure that you are abreast with the specific cannabis rules of the province or territory where you stay or are visiting.
Here’s all you need to know about the cannabis rules in British Columbia.
Who Can Use Cannabis Legally in British Columbia?
The minimum age at which you can legally purchase and use cannabis in British Columbia is 19.
This restriction isn’t intended to keep people from indulging, but rather to make sure that the underage aren’t getting access to a substance that may cause them harm.
Where Can You Legally Buy Cannabis in British Columbia?
There are three options available to people who want to buy legal weed in B.C.
First, you can get your pot from the retail stores operated by the British Columbia provincial government.
Secondly, you can choose to buy weed from any one of the different private retail businesses that have been licensed to sell recreational cannabis.
The third option is the online stores which are also operated by the British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch.
Cannabis Possession Rules in British Columbia
You are only allowed to have approximately an ounce (30 grams) of weed at any one time in British Columbia.
This limit is similar to the possession limit in all the other provinces and territories across the country.
However, the cannabis rules in B.C. allow you to have up to 1,000 grams of weed in your home.
Where Can You Consume Weed in Public?
As long as you meet the minimum age of 19, you are free to use weed in any public place where smoking is allowed.
Needless to say, weed use isn’t allowed near schools, transit stops, playgrounds, health board properties or anywhere else that kids frequent.
Can You Grow Cannabis for Recreational Use in B.C.?
Absolutely yes! Like is the case in most of Canada, residents of British Columbia are legally allowed to grow a maximum of four cannabis plants in their homes.
Do you stay in a rental property? Check with your landlord and confirm that you are allowed to grow cannabis on the property.
Do you live near a school, playground or any other public space? Grow your plants indoors to avoid legal problems.
Note that this four-plant limit is for an entire household, it doesn’t matter how many adults live in your home. Just grow the four plants only for all of you.
